USDA Labels

Overview

The USDA requires nutrition labeling for most meat and poultry products and some other products under its jurisdiction.

Formula Management provides a USDA Label format for products that require USDA nutrition labeling. The USDA label uses a nutrition format based on the earlier Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) requirements.

When using the USDA Label format, the nutrition information displayed follows the requirements applicable to USDA-regulated products.

Key differences from the standard USA Nutrition Facts label include:

  • Calories from Fat is required.
  • Trans Fat is voluntary.
  • Potassium is voluntary.
  • Added Sugars is included with Total Sugars.
  • Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, and Iron are required. Vitamin D and Potassium are not required.
  • Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and Vitamin C use IU as the unit of measure.
